Nathalie specialises in retraining racehorses for a second career in showjumping, trekking, endurance or hacking and she particularly appreciates the thoroughbred breed which she finds very versatile. This breeding and retraining facility was created in early 2020, and is located on the border between the Alsace and Lorraine regions, with a capacity for 25 horses on 20 hectares of pasture. The stable has a lunge-ring, and both outdoor and indoor schooling areas. For the most part, horses live in groups in loose barns with access to fields and unlimited hay. A showjumping rider for several years, I discovered retrained racehorses thanks to the Ecurie Winkelbach and their qualities made me want to contribute to their reconversion.

Based 30 minutes from Lyon in the Ain region, Axelle and Cédric are both involved in the racing industry via their implication in various roles: ex-jockey, work-riders, travelling head person and even racehorse owners. They are also competition riders in showjumping, eventing and hunter classes, and so It was natural that they should turn to ex-racehorses for their own purposes. Thanks to their own positive experience, they created partnerships with trainers and with the veterinarian of the Rhone-Alps “parc du cheval” equestrian facility to retrain these exceptional animals which offer peace of mind to their purchasers thanks to access to details of their full life history. SOS Cheval
The association SOS CHEVAL was founded in December 1980 by two friends and animal-lovers, veterinarian Claude CHAMBERY and horse-breeder Christian HAYS. The objective of the association was to provide help and assistance by offering a retirement home for horses, and this was soon extended to saving horses in cases of mistreatment and abandon. Non-profit and run solely by volunteers, SOS CHEVAL does not trade in or breed horses, and neither is its role to give free rides, as its horses are not rideable and are destined to be companion animals. The association seeks foster homes for its horses, and these remain in the ownership of SOS CHEVAL in order to guarantee the wellbeing of the animals.

Rehab Ranch
Vanessa, a veterinarian for 30 years, animal health professional specialising in the retraining of sports animals, and Ryanne, a student of agriculture, excellent rider and practician of ethological equitation, are the two linchpins of Rehab Ranch. This agricultural holding was created on a former 27-hectare dairy farm in the mountains, to develop facilities for breeding horses, retired horses and recovering horses (following injury or trauma), especially injured racehorses. Horses are turned out at pasture from spring to autumn, and stabled in large pens during the winter (or in the event of a heatwave). We have a veterinary stable (in contact with the rest of the group) and a physiotherapy stall. The animals live in groups, as close as possible to the ethological and physiological requirements of each one, and each horse is treated individually. Feed (grass or hay) is produced on site and available on an ad-lib basis. Freedom, friends, forage are the 3F which are form our guideline. A covered lunge ring to ease horses back into work and kilometers of tracks around the stable, in the heart of the regional park of Livradois-Forez, an exceptionally natural environment, allow us to retrain the horses for leisure activities.

SG Eventing
« SG Eventing » is a sports association located at Rouvres en Multien in the Oise region. The stable is managed by Gaëlle Jonchery (professional rider in eventing, showjumping and hunter, and also riding and competition coach), accompanied by amateur rider Salomé Pascoet, qualified in equine business management. SG eventing is above all a family operation, for leisure riding to top-level competition. The aim of the stable is to combine horse welfare with sporting ambitions. Facilities are composed of 14 stables, several riding tracks and areas (indoor and outdoor arenas, hacking trails, training tracks), numerous paddocks and the possibility of fields for broodmares, retired or convalescing horses. Interest for retired racehorses began when the stable received a superb AQPS to trade, whose sensitivity, intelligence and talents confirmed the value of working with this type of horse. Following this experience, and a contact from a friend of Salomé from the racing world, several thoroughbreds joined the stable and were successfully retrained. It was therefore a natural progression to join the ADDP circuit. Both Gaëlle and Salomé have kept a thoroughbred of their own for sports riding, in addition to a lovely mare who no longer enjoyed being ridden and who now breeds magnificent foals for the small “SG” breeding operation. Upon arrival the horses are given care and rest if needed, then will begin their retraining, taking all the time that is needed before they are offered for sale. A careful selection is made at the time of sale, to ensure the best possible future for both horse and buyer. They make a point of demonstrating that retrained racehorses make excellent riding horses, but also (contrary to preconceived ideas) sports and competition horses, each at their own level and in their preferred discipline, as with other breeds of horse. In conclusion, the objective is to listen, understand, train and guide the horses towards the rest of their new lives.

Les Ecuries Du Renan
The écuries Du Renan are situated in the Corrèze region, at St Sornin Lavolps, between Brive La Gaillarde and Limoges. Opened in late 2018, the family-run stable was initially a livery yard. Located just a stone’s throw from Pompadour and its magnificent racecourse, it was an obvious choice to include retraining racehorses to the activity of the stable, and this came to fruition during the second part of 2020 with the arrival of two former racehorses. Upon arrival, the horses have a month-long (longer if they require time for convalescence) break during which they are visited by the dentist, osteopath and farrier, and then they begin the retraining programme. By the end of 2022 around 15 horses had found new homes thanks to the retraining work. The stable’s facilities include a fibresand arena (30m x 70m), a sand arena (18m x 36m), a small school measuring 12m x 20m and another of 20m x 40m. 30 hectares of fields (including some reserved for haymaking) are divided into individual paddocks with shelters for on stable/turnout regime (7 stables 4m x 3m), a large clubhouse, saddlery room, inside and outside washing area for the horses, and toilets and washing facilities for riders. It is a great satisfaction to prepare these wonderful horses for a new life in a new discipline, and share the happiness of their new owners who regularly send news, photos and videos of my former protégés!

Juliette began riding 20 years ago in a small family-run stable. She progressed steadily, riding horses belonging to the stable and then her own, with a preference for dressage and working hunter rather than showjumping. She then joined Philippe Karl’s “Ecole de Légèreté” which teaches riding with the utmost respect for the horse, adapting the work to the horse’s physical aptitudes and evolution, taking time to ensure perfect harmony between horse and rider at each stage. Juliette discovered the world of racing when she purchased a mare (City) who had been retrained from the Ecurie Seconde Chance. During an internship at the Haras de Saint-Voir in the Auvergne, she experienced horse racing, training and care. After two years at this stable, she decided to go it alone and launch a project dear to her heart, retraining retired racehorses to become leisure horses. She qualified as an instructor at the Haras du Jardy and established herself in the South West of France two years ago. She bought three retrained racehorses with which she offered lessons, still in connection with the Ecole de Légèreté. She also continued to work with City who now evolves in advanced dressage. Her objective is to sell safe riding horses which have learnt the basics of dressage, jumping and hacking.
